Here in the more temperate reaches of Southeast Alaska, March often dances a tiptoe between winter and spring. As the calendar prepares to announce the first day of spring, I can see teeny tiny baby green things start to push from the ground while simultaneously getting blasted by sleeting half-snow half-rain. Alaskans in the more northern reaches are still buried in snow and ice.
But we're thawing. We're inching toward more daylight. We're remembering what fresh air and vitamin D feel like on our bodies. We're dreaming and scheming up plans to sleep outside, explore coastlines, and follow snow lines up mountains in the not-so-distant season.
And we're still soaking in hot baths, sipping tea, running the defroster in the morning, and shuffling around in thick socks and slippers.
The changing season happens slowly, and all at once. Spring is coming, I promise!
